Hi everyone! I have migraines that always always always start in my neck - almost like a muscle spasm, but then progress to a fullblown migraine that always end in my throwing up before I start feeling better.

Sumatriptan use to work great once it hits, but lately I feel like it's not as effective. Muscle relaxers don't work either, and ibuprofen/excedrin are a joke. Any tips on some preventative meds I could look at? Thanks all!

This may sound weird, but I've been eating pickles before bed and haven't had one since. It's been 2-3 weeks so far.

Propranolol or the Cefaly device are awesome preventatives

This sounds exactly what my migraines do! Even to the sumatriptan not being as effective as it used to be. I think the thing that has helped me is 800mg magnesium citrate (broken up into twice per day) and SAMe (the Jarrow brand). I went 11 days without a migraine, which is my current record. Also I learned from my neuro that the migraine can trigger the neck tension (almost like an aura) where I always thought the neck tension caused the migraine.

My dr just said last week the neck tension (occipital neuralgia) is the start of my migraine.

It sounds like my muigraines too. I have occipital neuralgia which used to be called occipital migraine (diagnosed 2008). Last week my doctir said the ON tension is the actual start of my migraine. I have always delayed maxalt until the aura happened. Reason: tsking it at the 1dt sign of muscle tension had no effect against the pain. Thrn when the aura would start hours later, the maxalt had no effect on it either. I have been chronic, in constant migraine since 2008. 5 months ago, I started using HIGH quality essential oils and have aborted the ON and the mugraine with aura. No brain fog. 40 plus years of migraine. I sm still stunned. I still get them. not cured. But my terror and anxiety are so diminshed. Puking use to make me feel better also. I would stick my finger down my throat just to feel better sooner.

Uggg sometimes I feel like my migraine is in my neck. It's such a weird feeling. Very painful. I've been alternating heat and ice just to be able to tolerate where I'm not crying.

I've had several nerve ablations in my neck and it's worked for mine. I get them every 6-8 months

I take B2 and magnesium, plus blood pressure medication (veripamil) as preventatives - these haven't reduced frequency, but did reduce severity.

Topomax is great. You tingle in your fingertips for a few days, but then it's better. But that helped a lot. I still had most of the month full of pain, but it helped.
