I am part of a small start-up with 9 employees. We do have health insurance and often joke that one of us is the 'HR manager' (not me). At a gathering today I was filling a drink and overheard the end of a conversation.

It went like, "the HR manager supports protecting yourself, it keeps our health insurance costs down!" Then everyone but me laughed, or I pretended to laugh. I do take Valtrex. Am I being paranoid? Would this coworker/boss who arranged the health insurance know what meds I take?

I'm about 99% sure they can't give out any medical records, that they would only see what things cost.

by "things", they can only see what is paid to the insurance company for premiums.

Yes, you are being paranoid and no, they cannot see any of your medical records. There are HIPPA laws that heavily guard your medical information even from the entity that's paying to subsidize your insurance.

You’re being paranoid. They don’t have a clue.

If you work in insurance, they might be able to get health records.

Absolutely not.
The phrase they all laughed at is an actual HR joke. It wasn't a joke with you at at the center.

Without directly admitting fault ("I wasn't singling anyone specific out"- yet we have 8 workers and 5 using the insurance) she apologized to me for saying that. Then I emailed her a link to a story on HIPPA. The whole situation has just made me want to work for a larger company where something like that would never have happened.
